On the CouchDB Mailing lists came the announcement of the founding of Couch DB Ltd., a new commercial support company for CouchDB.

Founders are two prominent CouchDB guys, Jan Lehnardt and Chris Anderson, plus Francesco Cesarini and Marcus Taylor who founded Erlang Training and Consulting.

IMHO this is a good thing, for both CouchDB and Erlang world.

A discussion spawned from that announcement about the name "CouchDB Ltd." for this company. Some competitors are not fully happy with it.

Main CouchDB guy Damien Katz also gave his comment here:

The name of the official project is Apache CouchDB. I see CouchDB as
being like Linux, where (as far as I know anyone) is free to use the
name. So, IMO it is completely fair to name a company CouchDB Ltd. But
it also means anyone else can name their company CouchDB LLC or The
Real CouchDB Ltd. This is a bigger problem. You don't have a
defensible trademark.

As all people involved seamed reasonnable persons I expect the situation to resolve peacefully in the next days.
